Tell us about yourself

I am particularly attracted by modern Italian, American and English literature, and enjoy modern Italian and French films. I enjoy cooking and my speciality is Southern Italian dishes. I like travelling abroad. I enjoy middle and long distance running, and hold a black belt in judo (first dan), black belt in sambo wrestling, and an orange belt in Shotokan karate.

Q

Why did you choose your specialty/job role?

A

As an athlete, I was injured on several occasions, and discovered how orthopaedic surgery could make the difference. I decided therefore to embark in such a career, and have since tried and inject as much science in my practice. Being a clinical academic, my practice is evidence based, and try and push the boundaries of my specialty with well performed clinically relevant studies.

Q

What’s the most interesting/memorable case you’ve been involved in for the Second Medical Opinion (SMO) service?

A

I have come across several patients who have been promised wonderful treatments and were rightly concerned at how invasive they were, and how miraculous they seemed. For example, a 45 year old gentleman whose knee had been totally destroyed in a terrible vehicular crash and had developed post-traumatic osteoarthritis who had been promised that an injection of stem cells would have restored normality.

Q

What do you most enjoy about working for Teladoc Health?

A

Interesting cases, and the opportunity to make a difference. Many patients have been led by their treating physicians to unreasonably high expectations. I very much see my role in these instances in modulating such expectations.

Q

How do you think patients can benefit from the Second Medical Opinion (SMO) service?

A

Very often the recommendations made by the local physicians are non-evidence based. If a patient is under the care of private physicians paid on a fee for service basis, there is a tendency to recommend as many surgical procedures as possible, and to raise expectations in patients. Also, very often such physicians are practising in a solo environment, not in inter-disciplinary teams, and have not had the opportunity to interact with highly qualified colleagues in other specialties. Given my job role, I often have a more complete and multifaceted approach to clinical problems, and this allows me to be able to more readily modify incorrect diagnoses.

Q

What is the professional achievement you’re most proud of?

A

American British Canadian Travelling Fellowship. Organisation of the medical services for Judo and Wrestling at the London 2012 Olympics. Chief Medical Officer for the World University Games of 2019.

Q

Are you involved in any other organisations or charity work?

A

Several sports bodies. Scientific societies. I am the President of the European College of Sport and Exercise Physicians.
