Now retired, Monica was Head of Onco-Gynecology, University Hospital Geneva, Switzerland until 2014. She was a Director of the Breast Center, University Hospital Geneva, Switzerland until 2014, CEO of the International Breast Cancer Study Group (IBCSG) until 2008 and Consultant Breast Center Zürich Plus Seefeld until 2013. Monica is a Member of the Independent Data and Safety Monitoring Committee German Breast Group (GBG), Frankfurt (Germany) and has more than 170 peer reviewed publications. 

Tell us about yourself

I am now retired, and have time for second opinions and for my hobbies: music, opera, reading (books are my passion and my house is full of books in every corner), sew and embroider (I like it, but I am not very good…)I am married to a very patient anesthesiologist and I am the mother of 2 very impatient wonderful daughtersAnd I am the grandmother of 2 very lively grandchildren.

Why did you choose your specialty/job role?

A

Oncology as a new speciality with continuous innovation. Interest in clinical research and clinical trials.

What’s the most interesting/memorable case you’ve been involved in for the Second Medical Opinion (SMO) service?

A

Soo many…  Everyone is interesting and everyone is memorable if you see the person behind the documents.

What do you most enjoy about working for Teladoc Health?

A

To deal with patients coming from all over the world, with different cultures, different health systems, different treatment’ possibilities.

How do you think patients can benefit from the Second Medical Opinion (SMO) service?

A

Opportunity and time to ask questions and to better understand their disease.

What is the professional achievement you’re most proud of?

A

To be the first woman full Professor of Oncology in SwitzerlandTo have built and certified the Breast Center in the University Hospital in Geneva.  To have been the CEO of the International Breast Cancer study Group (IBCSG) and have contributed to the implementation and conduct of some of the most important clinical trials in breast cancer.

Are you involved in any other organisations or charity work?

A

Yes, several charities in Switzerland. Former member of the Swiss Red Cross committee and Member of the committee of Europa Donna Switzerland (the European Breast Cancer Coalition).
