What’s the most interesting/memorable case you’ve been involved in for the SMO service?
I have had many memorable cases over the years. It is very difficult to choose one among so many interesting cases. I fondly remember those cases where my comments helped identifying the cause of the patient’s symptoms and provide rational treatments.
What do you most enjoy about working for Teladoc Health?
The clinical challenge represented by the cases that I must deal with (often from different countries), the professional and friendly attitude of everyone in the SMO Team and the possibility of helping patients to liaise with their treating physicians.
How do you think patients can benefit from the SMO service?
The opinion of international experts very often help patients to understand their clinical condition and gain insight into diagnostic tests and guideline recommended treatments. Moreover, the recommendations by the experts often help patients to identify key questions regarding treatment as well as specific points for discussion (diagnostic tests, clinical outcomes, best therapeutics options available locally, etc.) with the managing physicians.
What is the professional achievement you’re most proud of?
Having helped to put the concept of angina / ischaemia with no obstructive coronary arteries on the Cardiology map worldwide and unravel some of the functional mechanisms leading to myocardial ischaemia, as well as creating successful international research networks.
Are you involved in any other organisations or charity work?
I’m the immediate Past-Chairman of the ESC Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy and an advisor to the Executive Board of IOSCP (International Society of Pharmacotherapy). I also chair the Medical Advisory Board of INOCA International (a non for profit organisation run by patients with INOCA that aims to increase awareness of INOCA.
