Vaping has become the most popular tool for smokers looking to quit. But what happens when someone wants to stop using their vape?
Kate Abbitt, Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Teladoc Health UK, explains how our Smoking Cessation Service supports people in their journey to quit vaping safely.
It’s important to remember that vapes are significantly less harmful than smoking cigarettes as they don’t involve the burning of tobacco, but they are not risk free. Nicotine dependence and coughing, headaches, dizziness and sore throats can develop. The long-term health harms are currently unknown.
While some people are happy to vape long-term to prevent them returning to cigarettes, others want to stop—sometimes as soon as possible. That’s where we step in.
At Teladoc Health UK, we offer vaping cessation consultations for anyone ready to stop. Our priority is always to help you avoid returning to smoking cigarettes. In line with NICE guidance, we encourage people to continue vaping for as long as it prevents them from going back to cigarettes.
During your consultation, we will:
Explore your reasons for wanting to stop.
Provide accurate information and reassurance, correcting any myths or misinformation.
Assess your risk of relapse to smoking.
Tailor guidance to your needs, including whether a gradual or abrupt approach to quitting is best for you.
We also emphasise that if at any point you feel at risk of going back to smoking, it’s okay to resume vaping or use another form of nicotine replacement therapy. Your safety and wellbeing are our top priority.
