We know that enabling a person to access the right level of mental health support at the right time (avoiding under-treating or over-treating them) results in a more sustainable and effective recovery. But many private mental health services instead offer a ‘one-size fits all’ approach to treatment.
At Teladoc Health, we have created our version of the clinically proven ‘Stepped Care’ model for our virtual mental health service delivery.
Teladoc Health offers virtual treatment and support for mild to moderate cases. A mild mental health problem is when a person has a small number of symptoms that have a limited effect on their daily life. A moderate mental health problem is when a person has more symptoms that can make their everyday life much more difficult than usual.
Studies have shown that virtual mental health treatment is effective for managing and treating mental health conditions, with similar or better outcomes compared with in-person care.
In this article, Emma Forrest, our Lead PWP, explains why the Teladoc Health approach is so effective.
Our qualified mental health professionals use four psychometric assessments: PHQ9, GAD7, DAR5, and CORE 10 to determine the level and type of treatment a person requires. These assessments are standardized questionnaires that ask about the frequency and intensity of common mental health symptoms.
Once completed, we can have an informed discussion with the patient about the appropriate treatment. As the name suggests, the treatment intensity can increase or decrease for the patient over time.
Our expert mental health team comprises:
The variety of skillset again adheres to the principles of ‘Stepped Care’ in that we can ensure clients are matched with the most appropriate therapist need for that stage of treatment.
As you can see from the diagram below, the steps not only inform and guide the level of treatment intensity we may offer, but if we cannot provide mental health treatment due to the level of complexity, we will endeavour to support the patient by providing relevant information and guidance on the most appropriate treatment service delivered by statutory services.
It is worth noting that steps 1 to 3 are a highly active form of treatment and support our patients in taking a proactive role in their recovery while always aiming to be flexible and responsive to their presenting needs.
“The Mental Health service was very efficient, and I’d highly recommend it.”
Steps 1 – 3 include the use of:
“The mystrength app has been a godsend to me over the past few months. I have been working on the anxiety and mindfulness programmes on there. The app is honestly the best app I have used. The information there has helped me understand myself much better.” Anon app user
Progress, presentation, and patient engagement are continuously monitored throughout our treatments. Through this constant appraisal, we can ensure we continue to offer gold-standard virtual mental health service delivery.
