Zoe Embrey, Mental Health Advisor, at Teladoc Health UK reflects on the importance of self-reflection and how much this has impacted her personally.
Self-reflection is so important because our minds are incredibly powerful. Sometimes they can run away with negative thoughts, overthinking, worry, fear, or emotions that feel overwhelming in the moment. It helps us understand ourselves on a deeper level.
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to ignore our emotions or push difficult feelings aside, but taking time to reflect allows us to check in on ourselves honestly.
When I take time to reflect on the feelings that are impacting my mental health, it allows me to pause and separate myself from those thoughts. I can remind myself that I am okay, that I am safe, and that I don’t have to stay stuck in those feelings.
For me, self-reflection means naming the emotions I’m experiencing, understanding why I might be feeling that way, and being mindful of the situation rather than reacting immediately to it. It helps me process things with more clarity and compassion towards myself.
Mental health isn’t about never struggling it’s about learning healthy ways to understand ourselves and work through difficult moments.
Sometimes simply slowing down, checking in with yourself, and being honest about how you feel can make such a difference.
Self-reflection is taking a moment to pause and honestly look inward.
It’s asking yourself:
These simple check-ins can help you better understand your needs and take positive steps forward.
In a world that constantly encourages us to move faster, self-reflection reminds us to slow down and reconnect with ourselves.

The more I reflect, the more self-aware I become and that awareness helps me grow, set healthier boundaries, and make decisions that truly align with who I am.
Incorporating self-reflection into your daily routine doesn’t need to be complicated. Small, consistent habits can make a big difference to your mental wellbeing.
Here are some simple techniques that work for me:
Self-reflection isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being present, learning from experiences, and giving yourself the opportunity to grow.
Sometimes the most important conversations we have are the ones we have with ourselves.
