Fibroids are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in or around the uterus (womb.) They are known as uterine leiomyomas and can vary greatly in size.

In more severe cases, heavy bleeding can lead to anaemia (low haemoglobin levels), which may cause tiredness and fatigue. They can also sometimes affect fertility or cause complications during pregnancy.
As mentioned above, fibroids without any symptoms generally do not need any treatment.
If there are symptoms, the first step is to see your GP, who will examine you and request blood tests and an ultrasound of the womb.
If medication is not effective, or if the fibroid is large or causing complications, your GP may refer you to a gynaecologist. Further treatment options, including surgical procedures, can then be discussed.
