“The Second Medical Opinion helped me to feel more empowered and confident”

Lauren shares her experience using the Second Medical Opinion service to help her make informed decisions about her ongoing treatment

“I first heard about the Second Medical Opinion service through my partner’s work benefits, which also covered me as his partner. I’d used the service once before for something minor, but this time I needed a second opinion on a much more serious issue. I have adenomyosis and endometriosis, and I was unhappy with the treatment plan proposed by my treating consultant — particularly because it involved starting strong medication without thorough testing or additional scans.

The process of using the service was incredibly easy. I filled in a quick form, and everything was handled professionally and smoothly from there. I had a consultation with my case manager, who was absolutely fantastic – she spent over an hour with me, genuinely listened, took detailed notes, and asked thoughtful questions. It was the most in-depth conversation I’ve ever had with a medical professional.

Next steps

The second opinion I received confirmed that while the proposed treatment wasn’t necessarily wrong, it shouldn’t be administered without more tests first. This gave me the confidence to discuss further investigations with my regular treating consultant before committing to a medication that could potentially put me into early menopause despite being in my twenties. Thanks to the report and support from Teladoc, my NHS consultant has paused the treatment plan and is now reviewing my case in full, with appropriate scans being scheduled.

What stood out to me, beyond the quality of medical care, was the ongoing support from the admin team. They followed up regularly, checked in when records were delayed, and rescheduled calls without any fuss. This made a massive difference at a very stressful time in my life.
