World Mental Health Day: What this means to us

Author: Colin Preece, Head of Mental Health, Teladoc Health UK

As the Head of Mental Health at Teladoc Health, World Mental Health Day is not just a date on the calendar for me. It’s a day that holds a profound significance, when the world takes time to acknowledge something that impacts every single one of us: our mental wellbeing. This global recognition reminds us that mental health should be at the forefront of our daily lives—not just on World Mental Health Day.

Breaking the Silence

Mental health is often surrounded by stigma, fear, misunderstanding, and suffering; I’ve seen this firsthand over the last 30 years. This contrasts with the positive, transformative impact I have witnessed when open and honest conversations about mental wellbeing are started. This day is a powerful opportunity to break the silence and remind people that it’s okay to seek help, to talk about how they’re feeling, and to prioritise their mental health.

Mental health is health. It affects how we think, feel, and interact with the world around us. It influences our relationships, productivity, and overall wellbeing. Just as physical health requires regular care and attention, mental health does as well.

I asked some of my colleagues on the Mental Health Team here at Teladoc Health what World Mental Health Day means to them…

Alessandra Sorrentino-Lawrence, Clinical Psychologist shares:”Mental health is health. Just as we care for our bodies, we must also nurture our minds—not only on World Mental Health Day, but every day. It is a call to slow down, reflect and treat ourselves with compassion and kindness.”

Counselling Psychologist, Cristina Butnaru, shares a powerful reminder:

“World Mental Health Day is an important reminder that healing does not happen in isolation. We find true healing in safe spaces, in meaningful conversations, in being seen and validated and in the practice of kindness and compassion towards ourselves and others.”

Dr Russ Denny, Mental Health Clinical Lead:

“World Mental Health Day is a reminder that mental health is health. It challenges stigma, encourages open conversations, and highlights the need for accessible support for everyone.”

Easy access is crucial

I value working for a virtual healthcare provider because virtual Mental Health solutions are designed to meet people where they are, whether in their homes, workplaces or anywhere in between. This flexibility is crucial, especially when dealing with mental health challenges that often come with feelings of isolation, anxiety, or the fear of being judged.

By offering a variety of services—including therapy sessions, a 24/7 Mental Health Helpline, and a digital self-care app—we can meet people’s mental health needs in ways that fit their lives. Virtual care eliminates many traditional barriers, making it easier for individuals to get the help they need when they need it most.

Supportive work environments

Mental health is a lifelong journey, and creating a culture of compassion, both within organisations and communities, is essential. We are proud to partner with businesses to create supportive work environments where mental wellbeing is prioritised. Our goal is to make mental health care as routine and stigma-free as a visit to the doctor’s office for a checkup.

Taking time to talk

I encourage you to check in with friends and colleagues you haven’t heard from in a while today. Remind them you are there and thinking of them. Take time to start that conversation. Even seemingly small conversations can have a huge positive impact. They are not alone; this contact can be powerful and positive for both you and them.

As we mark this year’s World Mental Health Day, I encourage everyone to reflect on their mental health, reach out if they need support, and help break the silence for those who may still feel unable to—mental health matters—today and every day. Together, we can create a world where everyone has access to the care they need to thrive.
