Supporting UK Veterans’ Mental Health Inside and Outside the Workplace

Author: Dr Russ Denny, Clinical Mental Health Lead (and Veteran), Teladoc Health UK

As Armed Forces Week comes to a close, it’s vital to recognise the mental health challenges many UK veterans face—and how employers can help. For those who’ve served, asking for support can feel difficult. The military teaches resilience, stoicism, and self-reliance—qualities that help on duty, but can make it harder to seek help when civilian life becomes overwhelming.

Why veterans may struggle to seek help

Veterans are at greater risk of PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance misuse, especially those exposed to combat trauma or moral injury. These issues don’t stay in the past. They affect relationships, work, physical health, and everyday life.

Many veterans fear stigma or judgment. They may worry about what family, friends, or colleagues will think, or feel that opening up will bring back painful memories. But staying silent can allow symptoms to worsen. Early support can make all the difference.

What many don’t realise is that veterans may already be part of your workforce. They bring valuable skills like leadership and teamwork, but may also carry invisible mental health challenges. And the barriers they face—fear of judgement, pressure to appear strong—are often the same challenges that stop other employees from seeking help.

Employers who promote a culture of openness and support help all staff, including ex-Forces personnel, thrive.

Whether it’s through the NHS, veteran charities, or workplace health services, tailored mental health support is key. At Teladoc Health UK, we offer virtual mental health services designed to break down barriers to care, making it easy for veterans and employees to access help confidentially, wherever they are.

Support doesn’t always mean revisiting trauma in detail. It can focus on managing anxiety, low mood, anger, sleep issues, or simply creating space to work through identity changes and life after service.

Let’s break the stigma

The Armed Forces Covenant underscores our commitment to supporting veterans. But the principle applies across every workplace: mental health matters as much as physical health. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness. With the right support, recovery is possible.
