Nature – A Catalyst for Positive Mental Health

September is officially ‘Self-Care Month.’ September is also my birth month, making me reminisce about its importance.

Every year, I find a conker from a conker tree that the winds have battered to the ground. As I open it, I realise that I am the first person in the whole universe to see this! No other person has set eyes on this little miracle contained in its spiky outer shell. I revel in the fact that this moment is mine alone, and I can experience it time after time as I have for many years.

The leaves falling from the trees as I walk have never fallen. Many have and there will be more in years to come. However, I am the first person to see that leaf fall and witness its descent. I am in that moment – noticing the tiny things happening at this time of year is important as we often pass by continuing our busy lives.

Some may call this mindfulness and being present in the moment, and it is good for positive mental health. However, September is Self-care month, so take that extra time to engage in your life and notice the things that bring you pleasure and moments that happen for your eyes only.

Here are some other ways nature can inspire us:

1. Flowing Water (Rivers, Streams)
The sound and movement of water can help calm the mind, offering a metaphor for the flow of thoughts and emotions. Focus on its rhythm to cultivate a sense of peace.

2. Trees and Forests  Trees represent stability and growth. Their grounded presence can remind us to root ourselves in the present moment and practice mindfulness in the stillness of nature.

3. Sunrise or Sunset
Observing the rising or setting sun is a powerful way to reflect on the passage of time, change, and new beginnings. It provides a moment of awe and gratitude.

4. Mountains
Mountains can symbolise strength and endurance. Reflecting on their majesty can encourage a sense of perspective, helping to focus on long-term goals and resilience.

5. Birds and Wildlife
The activity of birds and animals offers an opportunity to practice mindful observation, focusing on their movements, sounds, and interactions, bringing awareness to the present.Nature - A Catalyst for Positive Mental Health - Teladoc Health UK

6. Flowers and Plants
Flowers embody the beauty of the moment. Their fragility and fleeting nature are reminders to appreciate life’s small joys and cultivate mindfulness in our surroundings.

7. The Night Sky
Gazing at the stars or moon fosters a sense of wonder and reflection. It can help broaden our perspective, encouraging thoughts of interconnectedness and our place in the universe.

Each of these elements in nature can serve as a focal point for mindfulness, helping to ground us in the present while inspiring inner reflection.
