More Men Are Reaching Out for Support — And it’s Making a Real Difference

Author: Dr Colin Preece, Head of Mental Health, Teladoc Health UK

Across the UK, more men are recognising they don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. Whether it’s work pressures, financial stress, relationship concerns, or unexpected changes, these experiences can take a serious toll on mental wellbeing. For too long, many felt they had to “just get on with it.” But that mindset is shifting — and it’s a change for the better.

The numbers tell a powerful story:

  • 1 in 8 men in England experience a common mental health disorder such as anxiety or depression.
  • Men account for 75% of suicides in the UK, with suicide remaining the leading cause of death for men under 50.
  • Despite this, only 36% of NHS referrals for psychological therapies are for men, highlighting a gap in help-seeking behaviour.
  • Encouragingly, 29% of men have accessed counselling or psychotherapy.
  • 75% of people who’ve had therapy would recommend counselling to someone who had emotional difficulties or needed mental health support would recommend it to others.

Teladoc Health UK Mental Health Support

At Teladoc Health UK, we’re seeing a meaningful rise in men seeking counselling and real-time mental health support. These conversations are honest, practical, and focused on solutions. The outcomes speak volumes: greater confidence, stronger coping skills, and a renewed sense of control in everyday life.

Counselling isn’t about endlessly revisiting the past. Our short-term, structured therapy helps men set clear goals, learn effective techniques, and build resilience. The focus is on what matters most right now — fostering healthier thinking, stronger relationships, and better performance at work and home.

Seeking support isn’t weakness — it’s strength. Athletes, leaders, and high performers across industries are increasingly open about how therapy helps them stay mentally strong. When men speak up, they not only improve their own lives — they help dismantle stigma for others.

Whether it’s a confidential chat or a few focused therapy sessions, support is just a call or click away. You deserve to feel well — and when you take care of yourself, those around you benefit too.

Let’s keep the momentum going. Reaching out is strength.
