1 in 3 Employees Struggle with MSK Conditions — Here’s What You Can Do

Author: William Kenton, Head of Physiotherapy, Teladoc Health UK

Our Head of Virtual Physio, Will Kenton, shares some tips for both employees and employers on how to better support MSK health whilst at work…

Did you know that around a third of the UK population lives with a musculoskeletal (MSK) condition? Common MSK conditions include back pain, knee pain, arthritis, sprains, strains, and fractures. These are issues that affect muscles, joints, bones, and soft tissues — and they’re especially common among working-age adults. MSK conditions are one of the top reasons for people taking time off work. More than half of those affected also report that their symptoms make it harder for them to perform their jobs.

The good news? A lot of MSK-related problems can be prevented—or at least managed early—if we catch the signs early on. Prevention tends to lead to better outcomes, less time away from work, and fewer costs all around.

Why Early Recognition Matters

Many MSK conditions don’t show up as obvious injuries. Instead, they often sneak in quietly — think minor aches, subtle discomfort, or fatigue that gradually builds up. That’s why it’s so important for both employers and employees to be aware of the early signs, and to create a workplace where people feel comfortable speaking up when something doesn’t feel quite right.

A safe and supportive work environment, good ergonomics, and regular movement can all make a huge difference.

What to Look Out For

Here are a few early signs that something might be off:

  • Pain that sticks around for more than a few weeks and doesn’t improve with rest or gentle movement.
  • Recent injuries that come with swelling, loss of movement, or difficulty using the area (this will need checking out urgently).
  • Numbness or tingling – especially in the hands, arms, legs, or feet.
  • Pins and needles that don’t go away easily.
  • Changes at work, such as:
    • Struggling with daily tasks
    • Finding that pain or discomfort is affecting your performance
    • Taking more time off
    • Feeling low, anxious, or frustrated (pain can really take a toll on your mental health too)

How Employers Can Help

Supporting MSK health at work doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple steps can go a long way:

  • Make sure workspaces are set up to support good posture and movement.
  • Encourage people to take breaks and move regularly.
  • Provide access to resources – like ergonomic assessments, wellness programs, and quick referrals to physios when needed.
  • Foster a culture where employees feel okay to say, “Hey, something’s not right.”

In a Nutshell

Musculoskeletal conditions are common, but they don’t have to derail your team’s health or productivity. The key is catching them early and offering the right kind of support. Physiotherapists are great at helping spot these issues early and guiding recovery, so having easy access to expert advice can really make a difference.
