Our Head of Mental Health, Colin writes…
Having a new puppy has changed routines in my house. I now regularly stand in my garden on a winter night waiting for an often distracted and excited dog to remember he must go to the toilet! The other night, it was cold and frosty, and I looked up and saw the stars gleaming with a brilliance that felt almost magical. Standing beneath that vast shimmering light can be a deeply grounding experience, reminding us of our place in something much larger than ourselves. In those quiet moments, we find an unexpected pathway to wellbeing—a connection between the universe and our inner world.
Stargazing invites us to pause. In the busyness of modern life, where our attention is pulled in countless directions, it’s easy to forget the value of stillness. Looking up at the winter sky permits us to stop momentarily, take a deep breath, and simply be. This mindful pause can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and centre us in the present—a small but mighty act of self-care.
There’s something humbling about staring at stars that have existed for billions of years. It shifts our perspective. The worries that weigh us down—the email left unanswered, the plans that didn’t go as expected—feel smaller when viewed against the backdrop of the infinite universe. This shift isn’t about minimising our struggles but understanding that they are part of a larger, ever-changing story. Gratitude often follows as we marvel at the beauty and mystery of life itself, evoking a sense of awe and wonder that can inspire and uplift us.
Stargazing can also foster a sense of connection. Whether you’re sharing the experience with loved ones or simply contemplating the shared human act of looking up, it reminds us we are part of a collective whole. As curiosity takes hold, “What constellation is that?” or “How far away is that star?” we’re reminded of the joy of learning and exploring. Curiosity, a key pillar of wellbeing, can reignite a sense of wonder that gets lost in daily routines.
Winter is often a season of reflection and renewal. Stargazing can become a powerful ritual to check in with yourself. Bundle up, step outside, and let the stars hold space for your thoughts. Use this time to set intentions, let go of the day’s stress, or simply embrace the beauty of the moment. This ritual of renewal can leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed, ready to face the challenges of the day.
In the winter sky, we find more than stars. We find perspective, peace, and a reminder that light is always present, even in the darkest nights. Sometimes, it takes a glance upward to remember that wellness begins with noticing.
