"Chronic Illness: I feel more equipped to manage my situation"

“I strongly advocate for the NHS and have always supported it. However, my primary frustration arose from the consultant’s approach during my treatment. I suffer from chronic pancreatitis, and he repeatedly attributed my condition to alcohol consumption. The truth is, I don’t drink much and never have. I insisted that alcohol couldn’t be the cause, especially since 30% of pancreatitis cases are unrelated to alcohol. Additionally, I felt frustrated because I knew my blood sugar levels were elevated.

At the time, I had access to Teladoc Health’s second opinion service, so I decided to try them instead, and I was really impressed.

Dedicated GP Case Manager

I was allocated a GP Case Manager who actively listened and analysed my concerns, leading to insightful questions I had never considered. This prompted me to think about the three questions I wanted to ask and the answers I sought. She didn’t just passively request my questions but engaged with me throughout the process.

The Second Medical Opinion expert’s report was returned, and the second interview with the GP handling my case was fantastic. She thoroughly reviewed the summary, ensuring that the doctor had covered everything, and at each step, she checked if I had any questions. This demonstrated a commitment to listening, a genuine dialogue of listening and responding.

The Expert Report

The report gave a different view, thoroughly analysing what was wrong with me. I have some advice about what we should do and what I should talk to the doctors and consultant about, which I’ve since done. Overall, it just gave that nudge forward to something going nowhere. Finally, there is something that says you’re not a heavy consumer of alcohol, literally. I’ve shared it with my doctor, and we’ve reviewed the summary together. I shared a summary with my consultant on the last call I was on.

The Second Medical Opinion Consultant also provided treatment options I had never encountered before. This diagnosis indicates that my diabetes is connected to my pancreas not functioning properly. It is not related to my diet. My pancreatic issues have resulted in insufficient insulin production, which is why I am diabetic; however, it’s not classified as Type 2 Diabetes. While my condition isn’t ideal, and my pancreas may eventually cease to function, I’m relieved that I’m not facing additional complications from diabetes due to the lack of insulin.
