“The male patient sought out the nutrition service as he wanted to have a more balanced diet, lose weight and gain a better understanding of portion sizing and consuming the right foods to consume for general health and wellbeing.
Plan
The patient’s pre consultation questionnaire, including a detailed food diary, revealed many simple but effective ways to approach this goal. His existing diet was low in fibre-rich plant foods and high in highly processed, refined foods. However, the patient had a great attitude towards making changes, making him a pleasure to work with. “I really want to make big changes to my lifestyle so that I have a great sense of wellbeing”.
During the phone consultation we discussed ways of effortlessly minimising the caloric density of the patient’s meals, focussing on a variety of fibre and protein rich meals that provide a feeling of satisfaction on fewer calories. Suggestions were made to help minimise daily sugar consumption, by adopting an ‘occasional, once in a while or weekly’ approach rather than including them daily.
He was also sent a healthy snacking resource with ideas to help combine protein with carbohydrates to promote satiety and provided with tips on gradually reducing caffeine consumption to help promote a healthier sleep pattern. Following the call, the patient received a meal plan template to help him outline his meals for the week ahead using the suggestions made, plus supporting resources describing the components of a healthy diet in more depth. He also received a set of consultation notes containing a summary of what was discussed during the call, including foods to reduce and those to include more often.”
Outcome
Within a few weeks, the patient emailed with the following “Life’s very good, I am 11lbs lighter, I have just recently come back from a weekend in Barcelona. I chose healthy options for my meals, I did have a few beers, I wasn’t too strict on myself. I feel as though I have a new lease of life now. I have totally kicked out the sugars, caffeine and processed foods completely. I’m way more active and sleeping like a baby at night. Family are now starting to mention I’m losing weight and looking much better.”
