When approached with compassion, mental health counselling can be profoundly transformative for individuals seeking support. Many of our patients enter the virtual therapeutic space without any prior counselling experience, so our mental health experts take an empathetic approach to create a safe and nurturing environment, enabling clients to explore their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment.
Building Trust and Connection
One of the core aspects of compassionate counselling is establishing trust and a genuine connection between the counsellor and the patient. This connection is fostered through active listening, empathy, and understanding.
One of our Mental Health Senior Counsellors, Anne-Marie, shares this technique:
Visualisation exercise: “Imagine sitting on a park bench during lunch break. I’m enjoying my sandwich while you savour your sandwich, and we are just two friendly strangers striking up a conversation about life. If a client becomes emotional and starts to cry, often apologizing for it, I reassure them that there’s no need to apologise. This is a judgment-free zone, and they can express themselves freely, whether shouting, screaming, swearing, or crying.”
Being Seen and Heard
When people feel heard and validated, they are more likely to open up and engage in the therapeutic process. In a judgment-free space, people can express their emotions freely, whether it’s through tears, anger, or laughter. This freedom of expression is crucial for healing, as it allows people to process their emotions and gain insights into their mental health challenges.
Promoting Self-Compassion
Through compassionate counselling, people often learn the importance of self-compassion. People begin to recognise their intrinsic worth and develop healthier coping mechanisms. Please read this article by Stephen England, one of our Mental health counsellors: The Power of Self-Compassion
Increased Resilience
Our counsellors support clients in setting realistic goals and developing strategies that lead to lasting change and improved mental wellbeing. We encourage our patients to incorporate the skills and insights gained into their daily lives, leading to better relationships, enhanced emotional regulation, and increased resilience.
In conclusion, compassionate mental health counselling is a powerful catalyst for change. Employing these techniques helps people relax almost immediately, allowing them to open up more than they expected. Frequently, they leave feeling lighter, having carried their burdens for so long that finally voicing their feelings is a significant release.
